Waste Not

Many of us experience a disconnect between how we manage waste in our daily lives (e.g. recycling, composting) and how things are done in the lab. It's time we change this. Opportunities to reduce waste in the lab are increasingly accessible, often through simply thinking about our work in a new way.  Please join us on February 4th to learn how you can start to divert the over 12 billion pounds of plastic scientists discard every year.

Reducing the Environmental Impact of Plastic Biotechnology Devices Through Improvements in Design, Manufacturing and Energy Sourcing
Achieving waste reduction targets in Life Science labs requires upstream advocacy.  Labcon is a uniquely sustainable manufacturer of high-performance plastic devices critical to biotechnology and clinical research.  By continually re-evaluating designs and manufacturing practices, Labcon has achieved dramatically reduced packaging waste, decreased energy consumption by 58%, reduced water use by over 80% and has increased the utilization of renewable energy sources to over 60% of total energy demand. Labcon has also considered the impact of outsourcing, long-distance shipping and geographic location on overall carbon production, reducing greenhouse gas emissions 89% by manufacturing, packaging, sterilizing and warehousing products within a one-kilometer radius in Northern California.  Learn how Labcon's proven commitment to sustainability with actions and transparency benefits eco-friendly life science

Supporting life science sustainability goals
Responsible disposal of laboratory waste is critical to protecting our waterways, land and air quality. Yet, searching for lab waste reduction opportunities and then matching them to sustainable disposal is more challenging than ever. This talk will share local success stories where laboratory chemical, plastic, and biohazard waste streams were perfectly matched to sustainable disposal alternatives – enabling Life Science organizations in the Bay Area to decrease their carbon footprint and their costs.

6:45 PM - 7:30 PM:  Panel Discussion: Reducing lab waste to prevent plastic pollution
